Mysteries of a Runaway Star

August 3, 2010

By Dr. Jim Logan

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has clocked a massive blue star nine times the size of our sun hurtling away from our galaxy at an incredible 1.6 million miles an hour.  The star, dubbed HE 0437-5439, is one of sixteen so-called hypervelocity stars. Cosmic detectives, all members of the Hubble team, appear to have solved several fundamental mysteries surrounding this wayward blue giant.

Declaration of Interdependence

Several years ago I was fortunate to be in Washington, DC at the same time the National Archives featured an exhibit that had a profound impact on me.  Respectfully displayed almost side by side in the dimly lit hall in sealed chambers under layers of special glass to protect the contents from harmful rays of light were the Magna Carta (1215), Declaration of Independence (1776), the Constitution (1787) and the Bill of Rights (1789).

The Synergy of Science, Technology, Defense, Government and the Private Sector

In the wake of the recently failed terrorist attempt to detonate a car bomb in Times Square, consider the following modifications to the scenario: Suppose the vehicle was not an SUV but rather a large rental truck like Timothy McVeigh used in Oklahoma City in 1995. Then add a deadly twist - conventional explosives in the truck are surrounded by ‘dirty’ material. If successfully detonated, first responders would not only have to deal with mass casualties secondary to blast and burn effects but also a rapidly fleeing panicked urban population exposed to varying degrees of radiation. Experts consider such a nightmare scenario entirely credible.

The Age of Personal Medicine Begins

One of the predicted benefits from the Human Genome Project, the 13-year international research effort to sequence human DNA, was the promise of ‘personal medicine.’ Though slow to materialize, the dawn of personal medicine has finally arrived. This is good news for anyone who ever has taken a medication - - or ever will. That’s just about all of us.

Welcome to the 2010s.

For many of us, myself included, 2010 couldn’t come soon enough.

Even TIME Magazine proclaimed the first decade of the 21st century the “Decade From Hell” (perhaps a little prematurely because the new decade won’t officially start until 2011).  Even so, I won’t argue with TIME’s well-articulated reasons for relegating the previous ten years to the trash bin.
